NexGen Tablet Press at GEA: How Absolem consultant Thibaux brings together innovation, sustainability, and ergonomics
Thibaux has been working as a consultant at Absolem since October 2021. Fresh out of university with a degree in Industrial Engineering – Mechatronics, we helped him find an exciting project in the R&D department of our client GEA.
What does GEA do?
GEA develops and builds process systems for industries including food and pharmaceuticals. As an international specialist in process technology, they are constantly looking for ways to make pharmaceutical production more efficient, safer, and more sustainable.
At their Halle site, they recently developed a new generation of tablet presses, the NexGen Press: more compact, more water- and energy-efficient, and more ergonomic than ever. Absolem consultant Thibaux made it his mission to help shape those innovations.
From R&D Assistant to true Project Lead
When GEA launched its plans in 2021 for a fully renewed line of tablet presses, Thibaux joined the project through Absolem as an R&D assistant.
Initially, it was planned as a one-year support assignment, but Thibaux quickly made a strong impression. Thanks to the opportunities and training provided by both Absolem and GEA, he grew into one of the driving forces behind the NexGen project. Nearly four years later, he has achieved several remarkable developments at GEA in collaboration with the R&D team.
Thibaux contributed to, among other things:
-
the development of a new ECM (Exchangeable Compression Module): a new generation of cassette that encloses all surfaces in direct contact with the powder, allowing it to be removed from the system as a whole, resulting in less powder loss or spillage, and making the module easier to clean while using less water;
-
the integration of fixed wash nozzles to reduce manual interventions and minimize the risk of leakage;
-
a completely reimagined ergonomic arm to safely remove the ECM, which can weigh up to 600 kg, using an inventive lightweight carbon rail system;
-
a completely new system: ART (short for Automatic Reject Testing), which before and/or during production automatically tests whether the unit correctly identifies and rejects tablets with incorrect dosage;
-
earning the sustainable GEA AddBetter label for the new tablet press series, thanks to 23% energy savings and 60% space reduction.
Thibaux’s journey with GEA is far from over. In the NexGen series and other projects he is now involved in, his contributions continue to result in tangible innovations. He is helping to strengthen GEA’s position in the high-containment pharmaceutical equipment market, while also developing solutions that significantly reduce the environmental footprint of such equipment.
From the classroom to a key role at GEA
Thibaux began his career at Absolem right after completing his degree in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Mechatronics. He deliberately chose to start in consultancy to gain broad experience and develop his skills across a variety of companies.
However, his first project at GEA turned out to be a perfect fit from the start. What attracted him was the combination of theory and practice: not just desk-based R&D work, but a role in direct contact with production, and the trust he received to grow independently in his role.
Today, he’s a key member of the team in Halle, contributing not only to technical development but also to strategic decisions such as roadmaps and the configuration of future machines.
Absolem opens the door to exciting projects at both well-known and lesser-known companies
Thibaux: “As a recent graduate, I was familiar with some of the major players, but beyond that, I didn’t really know what was out there.
Absolem opened the door to companies and projects that I probably wouldn’t have come across on my own. When searching a project for me, they really took into account what I wanted to.”
